When everything gelled, the music and show was fantastic, but there were a few times at least something was off, whether it was the vocals, aesthetic or mix. The one constant the entire night was the incredible guitar work showcased by Mayer, which really was a sight to behold. The entire night fluctuated from these extreme high and low points. This special concert includes three sets: an acoustic performance, a rare set with John Mayer Trio (John Mayer, Steve Jordan and Pino Palladino), as well as a set featuring Mayers full band. The entire visual was way too gaudy for what was supposed to be the most intimate tracks of the night.
During Mayer's acoustic set, his face was plastered in the center of this Japanese garden scene, featuring raining lotus petals, a waterfall and a curved bridge in the center. However, there was this one backdrop that didn't fit at all. Beach scenes, palm trees and city skylines all accentuated the mood of their respective songs. Most of the time it worked out just fine. Since Mayer's music has never been the most pompous or boisterous, which is by design, the stage production had to try to compensate. According to Johnson, Mayer heard their song on Spotify, which is how they landed this gig in the first place, so that should be an encouragement to all budding young bands out there looking for their big break. Their performance of their sole song on Spotify, "The Outfield," did grab the audience's attention though - just as it did Mayer's attention apparently. It was a real shame too, since the drum patterns were always interesting and laid down great grooves, but half of their set sounded like a drum solo with Martin Johnson rap-singing over it, missing any and all guitars and bass. The mixing was at its worst during The Night Game's opening set, which was absolutely dominated by thundering drums. A few songs drowned out Mayer's vocals while others had drums overpower the entire arena.
The audio mixing was questionable the entire night. The other main element that detracted from a few songs wasn't Mayer's fault at all. Mayer got plenty of cheers too, but they were typically after a killer guitar solo or during the first few lines of one of his many popular hits - not because of his vocal chops. It's telling that the only two times the crowd cheered after a vocal performance was after guitarist David Ryan Harris and Mayer's two background singers got the spotlight to sing by themselves for a few lines.
